Have you watched “Straw,” the latest Netflix film by Tyler Perry? If you have, you’re already aware of its emotional and compelling nature. At some point, you likely found yourself wiping away tears, perhaps even more. That’s the power of the story. Taraji P. Henson’s performance was so impactful that it made viewers cry.
Imagine the emotions that those behind the scenes must have felt when watching the film. In a recent interview, Taraji opened up about the emotional depth she had to tap into, particularly in the scene where her character attempts to rob a bank. She shared that she knew she was making a truly significant impact when the man behind the camera nodded and wiped away tears.
Regarding that powerful monologue in the scene, Taraji revealed that part of it was scripted, while some was improvised. This ability to seamlessly blend both elements is one reason she’s renowned for delivering rich, meaty monologues throughout her career.
Taraji advises fellow actors, “Forget about the words; the words will come. You just have to understand the character you’re portraying, your position in the story, the reason behind the monologue, and why the writer chose this moment in the script.”
Reflecting on the process of bringing “Straw” to life, Taraji wrote in her caption, “Bringing ‘Straw’ to life was an entire experience. I had to go there—emotionally and spiritually—to do justice to this story. I don’t take it lightly when a character asks me to feel everything… and baby, I felt it.”
