A tragic helicopter crash occurred at a Hindu pilgrimage site in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand, resulting in the unfortunate loss of seven lives, including a child and the pilot, as confirmed by local authorities and media reports.
The incident unfolded early on Sunday, June 15, when the helicopter, operated by Aryan Aviation, was transporting pilgrims from the sacred Kedarnath to the Guptkashi site. Tragically, the aircraft lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff from Dehradun and was subsequently discovered crashed in a mountainous region between Trijuginarayan and Gaurikund.
Nilesh Bharne, Inspector General of Police for Law and Order, provided a grim update, confirming that the crash occurred around 5:20 a.m. and that all seven individuals on board were unfortunately killed. Among the victims were pilgrims from Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. The bodies of the deceased were severely charred due to a subsequent fire that engulfed the aircraft after the impact.
Initial investigations suggest that the cause of the crash may have been a confluence of technical malfunctions and adverse weather conditions. However, a comprehensive and thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances leading up to the incident.
This tragic event comes just a few days after another aviation disaster in Gujarat, where an Air India flight tragically crashed into a residential building, resulting in the loss of at least 270 lives.
In response to the helicopter crash, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow and announced that rescue teams, including the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), had been deployed to the site. He shared the news on X, stating, “The extremely distressing news of a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district has been received. Rescue operations are currently underway.”
Authorities have also initiated a review of helicopter flight operations in the region. The pilgrimage route to Kedarnath, one of Hinduism’s holiest shrines, is renowned for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather conditions. Helicopter services are commonly utilized by pilgrims during the annual Char Dham Yatra, which commenced in early May.
This incident marks the fifth helicopter-related incident on the Kedarnath route this season. Earlier in June, six passengers miraculously survived an emergency landing after another helicopter encountered difficulties in Rudraprayag.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has previously taken action to address safety concerns in the area. In the past, the DGCA has suspended operators and tightened regulations. Tragically, fatal crashes have occurred on this route before, with the most recent one occurring in October 2022, when another helicopter crash resulted in the loss of seven lives.
