A tragic accident in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, occurred on June 20, 2025, resulting in the loss of a two-year-old girl’s life. The incident happened in their yard when the father accidentally ran over his daughter while reversing his vehicle.
The accident took place around 8:43 a.m. in Hendricourt, Kensington. The 55-year-old man was maneuvering his Toyota Hilux Double Cab when he moved forward after reversing. Unfortunately, the front left side of the vehicle struck the toddler, and the front wheel ran over her. The child succumbed to her head injuries instantly.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele emphasized that the accident was preventable and attributed it to the driver’s failure to maintain proper lookout. She stated that the man was reversing his vehicle when he inadvertently hit the child, causing her to sustain head injuries and pass away on the spot. The identities of the involved parties have not been disclosed, and investigations are ongoing. This incident has deeply shocked the local community.
Later that same day, a separate road accident occurred near Mbokodo Abattoir along the Bulawayo–Plumtree Road. A six-year-old girl was injured when a 53-year-old South African driver swerved to avoid her. The child had suddenly run into the road, leading to a head-on collision with another vehicle. The impact knocked the girl down, causing bruises to her forehead. She was promptly rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital and is currently in stable condition. Thankfully, no one in the involved vehicles sustained any injuries.
In response to both accidents, the police have issued a strong warning to motorists and parents. Inspector Msebele emphasized the importance of exercising caution and taking necessary precautions. She urged motorists to thoroughly check around their vehicles before moving, especially in residential areas, and called on parents to closely supervise their children, especially near roads. Inspector Msebele reiterated that parents should never allow their children to cross roads alone.
