UN Chief: Africa Can Become a Global Renewable Energy Superpower

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged greater investment in Africa’s green energy sector, saying the continent has the resources to emerge as a “renewable superpower.”

Speaking at the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), Guterres called for mobilising finance and technology to build a thriving renewable energy and manufacturing base that benefits African people.

“Green power in Africa lowers energy costs, diversifies supply chains, and accelerates decarbonisation for everyone,” he said.

He cautioned that rising debt must not be allowed to block progress, urging more concessional finance and stronger lending capacity from multilateral development banks.

“Africa has everything it takes to become a renewable superpower — from solar and wind to the critical minerals that power new technology,” he added.

The conference brought together African leaders and Japanese officials to discuss clean energy, economic partnerships and long-term investment opportunities.
