Donald Trump announced that a meeting is being arranged between him and Vladimir Putin, and mentioned that he and Barack Obama “probably” like each other.
Speaking to reporters at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Thursday, the Republican US president-elect said that Russian president Putin “wants to meet, and we are setting it up.”
“He has said that even publicly and we have to get that war over with. That’s a bloody mess,” Trump stated.
Donald Trump made some lighter remarks about a viral exchange between himself and former President Barack Obama at Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday.
The two sat together during the service in Washington DC and were seen talking for several minutes as the other mourners took their seats. Obama was seen nodding and then smiling as Trump spoke.
When asked about the interaction, Trump said, “I didn’t realize how friendly it looked. I said, ‘boy, they look like two people that like each other.’ And we probably do. We have a little different philosophies, right? But we probably do. I don’t know. We just got along. But I got along with just about everybody.”
This amicable exchange comes after years of public criticism, including Trump’s promotion of the “birther” conspiracy theory about Obama in 2011.
