Tulip Siddiq resigned as Treasury minister

Tulip Siddiq has resigned from her role as a Treasury minister.

Tulip Siddiq, Bangladesh’s former Treasury minister, has resigned following allegations about properties linked to her aunt, the ousted former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.

After mounting pressure over the allegations about properties associated with her aunt’s political movement, Ms. Siddiq referred herself to the prime minister’s ethics watchdog. It is alleged that she resided in properties owned by allies of Ms. Hasina, the deposed prime minister of Bangladesh.

Despite her previous assertions of innocence, Ms. Siddiq faced calls for her resignation, including from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch, who urged Sir Keir Starmer to sack her over the weekend.

Ms. Hasina was ousted from office in August following an uprising against her 20-year leadership and subsequently fled to India. Additionally, Ms. Siddiq is named in Bangladesh court documents regarding meetings with the Russian government.

Last week, she was scheduled to join a delegation traveling to China but chose to remain in the UK to fight for her name’s clearance.
