In photos: World’s biggest religious festival begins in India

Millions are converging in Prayagraj, a city in northern India, for the Mahakumbh Mela, recognized as the largest gathering of people in the world.

Devout Hindus from around the globe are arriving over the next six weeks to take a holy dip at Sangam, where the sacred Ganges river meets the Yamuna river and the mythical Saraswati.

It is believed that bathing in these holy waters cleanses individuals of their sins.

To accommodate the influx of visitors, authorities have established a vast tent city covering 4,000 hectares along the riverbanks. The arrivals are marked by vibrant processions filled with singing and dancing.
