Jose Mourinho Sacked by Fenerbahce After Champions League Playoff Defeat

Jose Mourinho Sacked

Fenerbahce have sacked Jose Mourinho just two days after their Champions League playoff elimination at the hands of Portuguese giants Benfica.

The Turkish club confirmed the decision in a statement on Friday:
“Our Professional Football First Team’s technical director, Jose Mourinho, who has been carrying out his duties starting from the 2024-2025 season, has parted ways with us. We thank him for his efforts for our team until today and wish him success in his future career.”

Mourinho was appointed in June 2024 on a two-year deal, tasked with ending Fenerbahce’s long wait for a first Super Lig title since 2014. Despite a strong campaign, the Istanbul side once again fell short, finishing second for the fourth consecutive season.

  • League record under Mourinho: 26 wins, 6 draws, 4 losses (90 points)
  • Overall record: 62 matches – 37 wins, 14 draws, 11 defeats (59.7% win rate)

Fenerbahce advanced past Feyenoord in the Champions League third qualifying round but were eliminated by Benfica in the playoff stage, ending their hopes of competing in the group phase of Europe’s top competition.

Mourinho’s departure comes just hours after another former Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, was dismissed by Besiktas following their Conference League defeat to Lausanne-Sport.

Mourinho, 61, leaves Istanbul without silverware, despite raising expectations when he took charge. His next move remains uncertain, though his name is already being linked with potential vacancies across Europe.
