Portuguese winger Diogo Jota, 28, tragically died in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, alongside his 26-year-old brother, André Silva, who played for second-tier club Penafiel. The fatal crash occurred around 12:40 a.m. on the A52 near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria.
Reports indicate the pair were travelling in a Lamborghini Urus when the vehicle veered off the road and burst into flames. Authorities believe a tyre on the high-performance car may have blown out, causing the crash.
Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Zamora Provincial Council. Their bodies have been transported to a forensic unit in Zamora for autopsy.
Jota, a father of three, joined Liverpool from Wolves in 2020 for £41 million and played as a left winger and forward.
In a heartfelt statement, Liverpool FC said:
“Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota.”
