Michelle Obama Sparks Backlash After Comments About Not Wanting a Son Like Barack

Michelle Obama has stirred controversy — particularly within online spaces like the “manosphere” — after making a pointed remark about her husband, former President Barack Obama, during a recent episode of her podcast Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast.

The former first lady, 61, said she was “so glad” she never had a son, implying that he might have turned out like Barack, 63. The statement raised eyebrows and reignited speculation about the state of the Obamas’ marriage.

During the episode, radio personality Angie Martinez suggested Michelle should have had a boy:

“You should’ve thrown a boy in the mix.”

Michelle responded bluntly:

“I’m so glad I didn’t have a boy… ’cause he would have been a Barack Obama.”

Martinez laughed, saying, “Oh my goodness, baby Barack. It would have been amazing.”

But Michelle pushed back:

No, I would’ve felt for him.”

Her brother and co-host, Craig Robinson, chimed in:

“She just borrowed our boys. She always borrowed ours,” referencing his own sons.

While Michelle’s remarks may have been made in a lighthearted or reflective tone, they didn’t go over well in many circles—especially among male-dominated online communities.

In one popular manosphere forum, a thread titled “TF is wrong with Michelle Obama” featured several users venting frustration over what they saw as disrespect toward the former president.

One user wrote:

“I made this thread about Michelle downing Barack in public. This is terrible. Tf wrong with this lady? There’s no way she was perfect in the relationship no matter what happened behind closed doors.”

Another added:

“First, she said Obama wasn’t around enough as a father. You’d think she’s gearing up for a 2028 campaign.”

A third speculated:

“She knows the real Barack; you all know the public image. Maybe she knows something we don’t.”

The Obamas, who have two daughters—Malia, 26, and Sasha, 24—have long been seen as a model couple. But Michelle’s recent candidness has only fueled ongoing rumors about marital tension and a possible split.

Her comments also struck a nerve in parts of the Black community, where some feel she’s unfairly criticizing a man still held in high regard by many, despite critiques of his presidential record.

Whether Michelle’s words were a moment of honesty, humor, or deeper resentment, the reaction online shows just how closely the public still watches—and judges—America’s former First Couple.

Others on social media suggested Michelle is struggling to make a name for herself. She wants to be seen as someone other than Barack’s wife.
