Pascal Dozie, founder of defunct Diamond Bank, dies at 84

Nigerian business magnate Pascal Dozie, the founder of the defunct Diamond Bank and former Chairman of MTN Nigeria, passed away at the age of 84.

Dozie played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s banking and telecom sectors. Notably, founding Diamond Bank, which later merged with Access Bank, and serving as the chairman of MTN Nigeria, where overseeing its expansion was a significant responsibility.

Family sources confirmed that Dozie succumbed to a brief illness. His legacy in Nigeria’s financial and telecommunications sectors remains profound.

Born on April 9, 1939, Dozie was raised in a Catholic household, where his father, Charles Dozie, served as a catechist.

He received his early education at Our Lady’s School Emekuku, Holy Ghost Juniorate Seminary, and Holy Ghost College, Owerri, where he obtained his West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Eager to pursue higher education abroad, Dozie relocated to the United Kingdom, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics.

His academic journey continued with further studies in Operational Research and Industrial Engineering, culminating in the acquisition of a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from City University in London.

Dozie played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s banking and telecom industries. He founded Diamond Bank, which later merged with Access Bank, and served as the Chairman of MTN Nigeria, overseeing its significant expansion.

His contributions to the country’s economic growth earned him widespread respect and admiration. He is survived by his wife, Chinyere, and five children.

Details regarding the funeral arrangements are yet to be officially announced.
