PICTORIAL: Tinubu receives Buhari’s remains in Katsina

President Bola Tinubu received the remains of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari at the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua Airport in Katsina on Tuesday.

As per a statement signed by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu arrived the airport from Abuja at 1:42 p.m. and inspected the guard of honor before the Nigerian Air Force plane carrying Buhari’s remains landed at 1:51 p.m.

Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital, was accompanied back home by his wife, Aisha Buhari; Vice President Kashim Shettima; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; and other family members.

Joining Tinubu at the airport were several dignitaries, including President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger Issoufou Mahamadou, and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

“A joint team of military pallbearers comprising nine senior officers laid the casket, draped with the Nigerian flag, on a trolley,” the statement read.

Tinubu and other dignitaries walked behind the trolley as the pallbearers escorted the late president’s body into a waiting military hearse for the one-hour journey to Daura, where funeral prayers and interment are scheduled to take place.

The state funeral paid tribute to the late president with full military honors, including a 21-gun salute.

The entourage has since departed for Daura, the late president’s hometown, where he will be laid to rest later today in accordance with Islamic rites.
