US President Donald Trump suggested that Russian participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup could serve as an incentive for the nation to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, FIFA and UEFA imposed a ban on Russia from participating in FIFA and UEFA competitions. This suspension affected both national and club teams, including their participation in the World Cup and European Championships.
The ban, imposed by FIFA and UEFA, remains in effect until further notice, preventing Russia from participating in upcoming tournaments, including the 2026 World Cup.
During a question-and-answer session, Trump was asked about the possibility of Russia’s participation in next year’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Speaking alongside FIFA president Gianni Infantino at the inaugural meeting of his World Cup taskforce, Trump admitted that he was unaware of Russia’s ban from the tournament.
Trump turned towards Infantino and asked, “I didn’t know that, is that right? He is the boss, I am not the boss on that.”
Infantino replied, “That is right. They are currently banned from participating, but we hope that something happens and peace will prevail, allowing Russia to be readmitted.”
Trump expressed his belief that Russia’s participation could be a positive incentive, stating, “That’s possible. Hey, that could be a good incentive, right?”
Trump emphasized the urgency of ending the war, highlighting the tragic loss of five thousand young lives per week, primarily involving Russian and Ukrainian soldiers.
He expressed his determination to bring an end to the horrific situation unfolding in Ukraine, stating, “Horrible things are going on over there. We are going to get that war stopped.”
It’s important to note that Russia is currently not eligible to participate in next summer’s tournament due to its exclusion from the qualification process.
