Rioting breaks out in UK town as missiles thrown at cops & homes burn after crowd gathers for protest

On the evening of Monday, June 9, a protest evolved into violent disorder in Ballymena town centre (Co. Antrim), following reports of a serious sexual assault involving two teenage boys. What began as a demonstration quickly turned aggressive as protestors — some wearing masks — threw missiles and set alight barricades on Clonavon Terrace/Clonavon Road.

Armoured PSNI officers, equipped with shields and vehicles, were deployed to regain control. Several rounds of missiles, including rocks, bottles, paint cans, and masonry, were thrown at officers. Damage to nearby homes, smashed windows, and smouldering fires were reported. Motorists and pedestrians were advised to avoid the area.

Extent of Damage:
At least four houses were reportedly set on fire and severely damaged. Fire crews had to intervene, tackling the blaze and checking houses for occupants. A separate car fire was also reported in nearby Cullybackey.

Official Statement:
Chief Superintendent Sue Steen emphasised that violence and disorder heighten risk to all. She urged residents to remain calm and assist efforts to restore order. Police confirmed they would continue monitoring the area overnight and appealed for information from witnesses via 101 or Crimestoppers.

The disturbances followed the arrest and court appearance of two 14-year-olds charged with the attempted rape of a teenage girl in the same area over the weekend. The protest drew hundreds, initially in support of the alleged victim’s family, before descending into disorder.

What started as a protest over a serious sex assault escalated quickly into violent disorder late Monday, leading to missiles thrown at PSNI officers, fires, property damage, and a strong police and fire service response. Authorities are urging calm and seeking information from the public.
