Russia unleashed one of its deadliest assaults on Ukraine in recent months, launching over 440 drones and 32 missiles across the country, according to Ukrainian officials on Tuesday, June 17.
The wide-scale attacks killed at least 15 people, including a 62-year-old American citizen, and left scores injured. Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, suffered its heaviest bombardment in months, with several neighborhoods left in ruins.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the strikes, stating that dozens of civilian targets were hit in the early morning barrage, including residential buildings, schools, and critical infrastructure. In Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, a ballistic missile obliterated an entire section of a nine-story apartment block.
“This is pure terrorism,” Zelenskiy declared. “The world — the United States and Europe — must finally respond like civilized nations confronting terrorists. Putin continues this war because he believes he can.”
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, dousing flames, clearing rubble, and rescuing survivors. In one dramatic moment, an elderly woman was seen being lowered from a shattered window on a stretcher as bystanders looked on in shock.
“I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s horrific,” said Viktoriia Vovchenko, 57, a resident of the area. “They were pulling out people—cut up, injured—elderly people, children. I don’t know how much more of this we can take.”
Ukraine’s Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko confirmed 14 deaths in Kyiv and one in Odesa, with nearly 100 people wounded across Kyiv, Odesa, and Chernihiv. The American victim died from shrapnel injuries, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
While Ukraine has retaliated with drone strikes inside Russian territory, none have caused comparable civilian casualties. Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed to have intercepted 147 Ukrainian drones overnight, including several near Moscow.
Escalation Amid Failed Diplomacy
Now entering its fourth year, Russia’s full-scale invasion has intensified in recent weeks, with renewed offensives in eastern Ukraine and a new front opened in the northeastern Sumy region.
Recent peace talks in Istanbul failed to produce any breakthrough. Meanwhile, international diplomacy is faltering. U.S. President Donald Trump, who recently left the G7 summit in Canada early to address Middle East tensions, has scaled back U.S. support for Ukraine and resisted calls for harsher sanctions on Moscow. He has also floated the idea of re-admitting Russia into the G7, a group it was expelled from following the 2014 annexation of Crimea.
President Zelenskiy, who attended the G7 summit seeking additional military aid and stronger sanctions, was unable to meet with Trump due to the latter’s early departure.
Growing Civilian Toll and Global Concern
The latest wave of attacks highlights the deepening humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and the collapse of diplomatic solutions. As Russia continues its aggressive campaign amid muted global response, civilians bear the brunt of a war that shows no sign of ending.
