Trump says U.S. remains committed to Ukraine, but security guarantees undecided

President Donald Trump reaffirmed U.S. support for Ukraine but said no agreement has been reached on potential security guarantees, calling them a major obstacle to ending Russia’s war.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the issue was central to his August 15 meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska. He revealed the two leaders also discussed the prospect of reducing their nuclear arsenals once the conflict is resolved.

“We would like to denuclearize. It’s too much power, and we talked about that also. That’s part of it, but we have to get the war over with,” Trump said.

When asked why Putin has avoided meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Trump replied simply: “Because he doesn’t like him.”
