U.S. Changes Visa Policy for Nigerians: 3-Month, Single-Entry Visas Now in Effect

If you’re planning a trip to New York, applying to study in California, or heading to Atlanta for business, there’s a major update you need to know: the United States has implemented new visa rules for Nigerian citizens.

According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to holders of Nigerian passports will now be single-entry and valid for just three months. This marks a significant departure from the previous policy, which allowed multiple-entry visas valid for up to five years.

“Most non-immigrant and non-diplomatic visas issued to citizens of Nigeria will be single-entry visas with a three-month validity period,” the embassy confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday.

Who Is Affected?

The change applies to all relevant U.S. visa applications submitted on or after July 8, 2025. However, previously issued visas remain valid for their full duration. If your visa was granted before this date, there is no change to your travel rights.

Why the Change?

The policy update is part of the U.S. government’s global visa reciprocity framework, which ensures that visa rules for foreign nationals reflect the treatment American citizens receive in those countries.

In short: if Nigerian authorities issue shorter or limited-entry visas to Americans, the U.S. may do the same in return.

Additionally, the new visa guidelines are designed to strengthen the integrity of the U.S. immigration system, aligning with international security and documentation standards. The U.S. Embassy outlined a few key benchmarks behind the decision:

  • Enhanced document security and identity verification

  • Stronger controls to prevent visa overstays

  • Improved information sharing on criminal or immigration violations

Is This Policy Permanent?

Not necessarily. The U.S. stressed that visa reciprocity is an ongoing process and that terms may be reviewed and updated based on progress in bilateral cooperation.

“We commend the ongoing efforts by the Government of Nigeria’s immigration and security agencies to meet standards of international best practices,” the embassy said, indicating potential for future changes.

U.S.-Nigeria Relations Remain Strong

Despite the stricter visa rules, the U.S. emphasized that its relationship with Nigeria remains positive and full of opportunity. The embassy reiterated its commitment to advancing business, educational, and cultural exchanges, and urged Nigerian travelers to ensure their documents are accurate, valid, and used in accordance with visa regulations.

“The United States values its longstanding relationship with Nigeria and remains committed to expanding our partnership based on mutual respect, shared security priorities, and economic opportunity.”

What Nigerians Should Do

Travelers are advised to:

  • Ensure their passport and travel documents are genuine and up to date

  • Carefully follow all visa terms and U.S. entry regulations

  • Apply for the correct visa type based on their travel purpose

For those planning future trips to the U.S., it’s crucial to stay informed about visa requirements and prepare accordingly.
