On May 8, 2025, at approximately 6:07 p.m. local time, white smoke billowed from the chimney atop the Sistine Chapel, signaling the election of a new pope by the College of Cardinals. This traditional sign indicates that the 133 cardinal electors have reached the required two-thirds majority to elect the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.NEW POPE IS CHOSEN

The announcement of the new pope’s identity is eagerly anticipated. Following Vatican protocol, the senior cardinal deacon will soon appear on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica to declare “Habemus Papam” (“We have a pope”) and reveal the new pope’s chosen name. The newly elected pope is expected to make his first public appearance shortly thereafter to deliver the traditional Urbi et Orbi blessing.

Earlier in the day, black smoke had emerged from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney, indicating inconclusive voting rounds. However, the subsequent white smoke and the ringing of St. Peter’s Basilica’s bells confirmed that a consensus had been reached. The conclave, convened following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, lasted just over a day, reflecting a swift decision by the cardinal electors.

Crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square erupted in cheers upon witnessing the white smoke, waving flags and chanting in celebration. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as the faithful awaited the introduction of their new spiritual leader.

As the world awaits the official announcement, attention remains focused on the Vatican, where the newly elected pope will soon address the faithful and begin his papacy.
