Why Meghan Markle’s 2022 Vogue cover was rejected

New details have surfaced about Meghan Markle’s alleged fallout with former British Vogue editor Edward Enninful, revealing that it wasn’t solely about missing out on a cover.

According to multiple insiders who spoke with Page Six and the Daily Mail, the tension between the Duchess of Sussex and the fashion editor began when plans for a September 2022 British Vogue cover started to take shape. Markle was scheduled to deliver a keynote speech at the One Young World Summit in Manchester that same month, and a feature in the magazine was intended to highlight her event.

However, the situation escalated when it was discovered that Markle had a list of demands. She reportedly sought complete control over the creative direction, including choosing the photographer, writer, approving the final edits, cover lines, and even pushing for a “global cover” that would appear simultaneously on both UK and US Vogue.

A source expressed their disbelief, stating, “Meghan asked for control over [the] photographer, writer, final edit, photos, cover lines, and wanted a global issue. Nobody gets that. Not even Beyoncé.”

Undeterred, Markle then reportedly reached out directly to US Vogue editor Anna Wintour to pitch the idea once again. Wintour, out of courtesy, agreed to a Zoom call, but the request was ultimately denied. At the time, the magazine had already secured Serena Williams as its cover star.

Interestingly, Adele holds the distinction of being the only celebrity to have ever appeared on both US and UK Vogue covers simultaneously, a feat that Markle had hoped to replicate.

There are conflicting reports, though. Another insider claims that Markle never actually requested the cover; it was Vogue that approached her several times, especially after her wedding to Prince Harry. It’s worth noting that Markle previously worked with Enninful in 2019 when she guest-edited the magazine’s “Forces for Change” issue but chose to stay behind the scenes rather than appear on the cover herself.

Ultimately, Markle did land a high-profile media feature in September 2022, but not with Vogue. She appeared on the digital cover of The Cut, alongside Megan Thee Stallion, as she promoted her now-cancelled “Archetypes” podcast. She was also slated for a Variety cover that was later delayed following Queen Elizabeth II’s passing.

As for Enninful and Markle’s relationship today, reports say they’re no longer on speaking terms. An insider told the Daily Mail that Edward was furious to have lost the project and could only offer a big feature inside the magazine and online, but Markle turned it down.

Enninful stepped down from British Vogue in February 2024.
