China Imposes 34% Tariffs on U.S. Imports in Response to Trump’s Trade Policy

China has announced new 34% tariffs on U.S. imports, escalating trade tensions just days after President Donald Trump implemented a similar tariff rate against Beijing as part of his reciprocal tariff strategy.

China’s Retaliatory Tariffs Take Effect April 10

According to The Wall Street Journal, the new Chinese tariffs will go into effect on April 10, 2025. The decision comes as a direct response to U.S. tariff hikes, which have targeted Chinese imports under the justification of trade fairness.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun strongly condemned the U.S. tariffs at a press briefing in Beijing on Thursday, stating:

“The U.S. announced tariff hikes on imports from many countries, including China, under the pretext of reciprocity. This gravely violates World Trade Organization (WTO) rules and undermines the rules-based multilateral trading system. China firmly rejects this and will do what is necessary to defend our legitimate rights and interests.”

He further warned that trade wars have no winners, urging the U.S. to reconsider its stance and engage in negotiations based on equality, respect, and mutual benefit.

Trump Defends U.S. Tariff Plan at Economic Event

The 34% tariff on Chinese goods, announced on Wednesday, is in addition to the 20% tariff the Trump administration had already imposed.

President Trump defended his sweeping tariff policy at a “Make America Wealthy Again” event, arguing that his economic approach will revive U.S. jobs and industries.

“American steel workers, auto workers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen have suffered gravely. They watched in anguish as foreign leaders stole our jobs, foreign cheaters ransacked our factories, and foreign scavengers tore apart our once-beautiful American dream,” Trump stated from the White House Rose Garden.

He emphasized that his administration’s tariffs will bring jobs back to the U.S., reduce taxes, and help pay down the national debt.

“With today’s action, we are finally making America great again. Jobs and factories will come roaring back, and you see it happening already. We will supercharge our domestic industrial base.”

White House Brushes Off Concerns About Rising Costs

The latest trade developments have raised concerns about rising prices for American consumers. However, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed these fears during a press briefing on Tuesday, assuring the public that the tariff strategy “is going to work.”

The U.S.-China trade war continues to fuel uncertainty in global markets, with analysts closely watching for further retaliatory measures or possible trade negotiations between the two economic giants.
