DHS terminates Coast Guard boss over border lapses, DEI focus, recruitment

The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Adm. Linda Lee Fagan, has been terminated due to concerns about the border, recruitment issues, and an “erosion of trust,” as confirmed by a senior DHS official to Fox News.

The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, made the decision to terminate Fagan.

The official cited Fagan’s leadership deficiencies, operational failures, and inability to effectively advance the strategic objectives of the Coast Guard as the reasons for the termination.

Admiral Linda Fagan, the 27th Commandant of the Coast Guard, took office on June 1, 2022. Her responsibilities included overseeing all global Coast Guard operations, managing a workforce of 42,000 active-duty personnel, 7,000 reserve personnel, and 8,700 civilian personnel, and providing support to 21,000 Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers.

However, Fagan’s tenure was marked by several critical challenges. These included failures to address border security threats, insufficient leadership in recruitment and retention, mismanagement in acquiring key acquisitions such as icebreakers and helicopters, excessive focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, and an “erosion of trust” stemming from the mishandling and subsequent cover-up of Operation Fouled Anchor.
