New Orleans Jail Escapee Antoine Massey Enjoys Memorial Day in Viral Video
Two of the ten inmates who escaped from a New Orleans jail on May 16 remain at large, with one fugitive, Antoine Massey, 31, spotted in a viral video celebrating Memorial Day.
Massey was filmed relaxing at an undisclosed location, wearing a white tank top and grey swim trunks, his appearance altered by the removal of his signature braids. In the video, Massey is heard saying, “I’ve been gone for 13 summers. I ain’t been swimming since 2013,” before diving into a swimming pool.
The other escapee still on the run is Derrick Groves, 27. As of Tuesday morning, both men remain fugitives.
Authorities have captured eight of the escaped inmates with the help of U.S. Marshals. Those recaptured were subsequently transferred to Louisiana State Penitentiary, better known as Angola — a prison notorious for its high-security conditions.
Investigators believe Massey, a four-time escapee, masterminded the jailbreak. A jail maintenance worker, Sterling Williams, 33, was arrested after admitting to disabling the water system in the inmates’ cell to facilitate the escape under a toilet. At least a dozen others have also been arrested for aiding the fugitives.
“Antoine and Derrick — you are NEXT!” Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry posted on X (formerly Twitter) Monday night, in a warning to the remaining escapees.
Social media blogger Kollege Kidd noted that Massey’s father was reportedly best friends with Reginald “Rabbit” McDonald, the late stepfather of New Orleans native and rapper Lil Wayne.
Authorities continue to search for the two fugitives and have urged the public to report any sightings.
